OF NOW

“Now” - The subjective sense of a current mode of existence. Being in the now is to surrender to the arrow of time.

OF NOW is a media art exhibition by Lumus Instruments showcasing installations and performances that provoke contemplation on the “now”. They take deep dive with audiovisual artworks, artificially crafting experiences that give rise to a sense of timelessness and radical realism. With these works, Lumus explores variations of being through the experience of now.

ABOUT

Taking place in a former distillery in Berlin, the collaboration between Monopol and Lumus Instruments provides the opportunity to present experiential works of art in a form that is pure yet atmospheric. Three dark and monumental spaces will be the canvas of sequenced choreographies and machines of unified media.

The program ‘Of Now’ combines a media-art exhibition and audiovisual live-performances with a range of avant-garde musicians. The latter takes the shape of Lumus Instruments’ Contrarium, where audiovisual experiments are performed live on an intricate and large-scale audiovisual canvas.

Exhibition installations:

Actualization

Vectors of light create geometries that continually morph and transform. Through coordinated motion, it makes actual what exists virtually.

by Lumus Instruments

Lumus Instruments is a multidisciplinary collective working with light, sound and structure in various forms of installation art and scenography. The studio is led by Timo Lejeune, Julius Oosting and Timothy Hendriks.

They have a fascination with physical manifestations of computational technology and work continuously on various site-specific technological installations.

Reflecting Bodies

Volumes and textures sculpted from aluminum create an interplay of light. Shapes diffuse in multiple directions, fostering a playful and experimental environment for light and reflection.

by Simone Smelt

Simone Smelt is an independent designer, a creator of concepts, products, and furniture, based in Amsterdam. She creates objects and spaces that inspire wonder and provoke thought. Simone thinks design should be interactive, transformative, and playful.

Her work combines bold aesthetics and a focus on movement and visual interaction with the surrounding environment. Thus encouraging intuitive interaction.

Polynode

Extended lines of light give shape to a spatial instrument. Within it reside virtual nodes that act as sonic translators of their digital habitat.

Contrarium live acts by:

Albert van Abbe
based in Amsterdam

Over 20 years, sound-builder and audiovisual artist Albert van Abbe has been assembling sonic architectures for intimacy, sensibility and movement. Spaces in which you can lose yourself and find oneself at the same time.

Boris Acket
based in Amsterdam

Boris is a contemporary artist, composer & director specialized in multidisciplinary projects within music, installation-art, performance & film. Throughout the years, he has developed a unique approach to audio-visual composing that uses complex echo-chains. This creates a sound aesthetic that is distinct and chaotic, and experientially indistinguishable from the visual patterns it creates.

JakoJako
based in Berlin

JakoJako makes extensive use of modular synthesis in het productions and on stage. She is known for her hard and dark techno music containing blends of trance, focusing on modular and analogue synthesis.

Nadia Struiwigh
based in Berlin

From deep pools of ambience to the brain-feeding mechanisms of electro and techno, Nadia Struiwigh’s gift is in expressing herself with conviction through her machines. As an accomplished live artist and producer, her affinity for synthesis and sequencing results in a spellbinding strain of electronica drawn from a richly personal sonic space she has marked out for herself.

Max Frimout
based in Amsterdam

Max is an experimental sound artist that creates sonic landscapes by feeding various audio sources into his modular systems. He performs this in live textural work and techno sets.

Maarten Vos
based in Berlin

He focuses his work on the creation of composing modern classical, ambient and electronic music where he transforms traditional instrumentation into newfangled sounds with an exploratory approach to the cello combined with modular synthesizers and other electronic instruments.

Enequist
based in Amsterdam

Is a music producer and multi-instrumentalist specializing and focusing on new electronic aesthetics. He explores the boundaries of electronic music, touching multiple genres within this fast scene.

Victor Dissel
based in Amersfoort

Victor is an audiovisual artist and composer. He concentrates in the fields of sonic design, spatial audio and composition. In his work, auditory and visual narratives are often merged into three-dimensional experiences.

Visual Artists:

Emanuel Nijkerk
based in Amsterdam

Emanuel is a light- and visual artist. With a strong passion for using spatial perspectives, he uses light and video as a tool. Emanuel integrates this in cross links between art forms and media. Performing live and being able to change things on the spot is an essential element for him.
